Pho Element, nestled in the heart of San Mateo, California, offers an authentic and vibrant Vietnamese dining experience centered around one of the country’s most beloved staples: phở. Specializing in traditional Vietnamese noodle soups, this modern eatery celebrates rich, aromatic broths and fresh, quality ingredients, delivering a true taste of Vietnam in every bowl.
At Pho Element, the extensive menu is a joyful exploration of Vietnamese flavors. Among the standouts is their Rare Beef Noodle Soup, where tender, thinly sliced rare beef meets perfectly cooked wide rice noodles soaked in a deeply savory, fragrant broth that invigorates the senses with each sip. For those seeking hearty comfort, the Oxtail Pho and the luxurious Wine Sauce Oxtail Noodle Soup add layers of richness and complexity, simmered to melt-in-your-mouth perfection.
Beyond pho, their Hainanese Chicken with Rice (Boneless) is a standout—a silky, tender chicken served alongside fragrant rice and accompanied by three distinct dipping sauces that add a delightful depth of flavor. The delicate balance of textures and tastes here makes it a must-try. The Shrimp Spring Rolls, though lighter and simpler, bring fresh crispness with a delicate herbaceousness, perfect as a refreshing starter.
The menu further showcases enticing dishes like the Saigon Butter Tofu and Beef Short Ribs with Rice, each bursting with savory notes and expertly balanced seasonings that speak to traditional Vietnamese culinary craftsmanship. For a comforting, exotic twist, the curry chicken noodle soup offers creamy, spiced warmth that surprises and satisfies in equal measure.
Vegetable lovers will appreciate the assortment of stir-fried greens, notably the StirFry Pea Shoots with Garlic and StirFry Okra with Garlic, which provide a fresh, garlicky crunch that complements the richer main dishes beautifully. On the sweeter side, the Sweet Tofu with Coconut Slush and Three Color Drink with Coconut Slush present perfectly refreshing finishes to a flavorful meal.
The ambiance at Pho Element is modern and welcoming, with a spacious layout that balances casual comfort and clean sophistication. Diners frequently praise the efficient and friendly service that quickly delivers piping-hot bowls, ensuring no one waits long to dive into their meal. The honest hospitality and well-organized space create a pleasant dining experience that invites both quick lunches and leisurely dinners.
Customer feedback consistently highlights Pho Element’s dedication to quality and flavor. Dave Liu was pleasantly surprised by the curry pho's deliciousness, and even hinted at hidden gems like the “shaking beef garlic noodles” from the secret menu. Grace Grace’s praise for the three kinds of dipping sauces with the chicken dish encapsulates the restaurant’s attention to detail that elevates classic dishes.
For visitors to San Mateo craving authentic Vietnamese cuisine that remains heartfelt but approachable, Pho Element stands out as a go-to destination. Whether you’re indulging in a comforting bowl of traditional pho or sampling contemporary Vietnamese fare made with care, you’re sure to leave satisfied, with flavors that linger and a welcoming atmosphere that makes you want to return time and again.
It was great that they opened on Thanksgiving Day even though it was only half day. The noodle soups were delicious. Rare beefs were fresh. Must try their chicken coconut noodle soup. Shrimp rolls were just ok, the wrap was too chewy. Spacious, quick and friendly service. Will definitely come back again!
Wow the service was good and the curry pho was surprisingly great! Delicious!! Shaking beef garlic noodles is part of the “secret”menu.
Love the wide rice noodles. Pho ga is very good - they had a short wait on a wed for dinner
It's a solid, modern Vietnamese restaurant that we've done takeout and dine in at over the years. We always dine in when ordering pho. They don't have all your Vietnamese classics and just focus on what they do best. Love the flavors and the restaurant is decently clean and well staffed. We got our food pretty quickly and the final price was fair. Service was good and we never waited long. Parking can be rough since it's often busy, so don't be surprised if you have to walk. You have to try their tofu!
We ordered 3 dishes:- 1. Rare beef noodles soup 2. Hainanese Chicken ( boneless) rice 3. Seasonal dish-garlic fried noodles w/ shrimp All dishes are very yummy! Noodles soup obviously is their signature dish, chicken rice as well, especially the 3 kinds of dipping sauces for the chicken is fantastic! Staffs are very polite and very sincere and helpful, very efficient! Shop is clean! Everything is out of our expectations! Surely will come back once we are in this area! We are so hungry for the yummy food so we can only take photo when we’re almost finished our dinner! We wish them all the blessed and prosperous future, happy healthy life! Amitabha! P.S. remember to look both sides of the menu, otherwise you may miss some yummy dishes like us!
Small but very busy restaurant serving Vietnamese cuisine. We ordered garlic noodles with grilled shrimp and the portion of the noodles was OK but with lots of shrimps. The grilled chicken was pretty tasty. Good, friendly and fast service.
